Herbalism in Practice
As an herbalist, Megan’s goal is to work with the plants to support the body in its many functions, addressing imbalances and maintaining well being. Her practice incorporates the energetic concepts of traditional western herbalism with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Nutrition, lifestyle choices, movement, and health history will be discussed during the consultations before moving into using plant medicine; this is simply to ensure that in seeking to use plants for medicine one feels agency over and empowerment in their own healing experience.
Herbal medicine is not a magic bullet, it takes dedication and patience to work with the plants. As many can attest, healing is non-linear and progress can fluctuate based on many factors. In using herbal medicine to guide us through the trials & tribulations of healing, we develop a new relationship with ourselves, our definition of health, and the plant allies. That said, the plants will generously aid us if we take the steps to be fully present in the healing process.
Megan’s experience and interests involve working with conditions that are often marginalized in western medicine, including but certainly not limited to Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, autoimmunity, and mental health. As a parent, she is also knowledgeable and experienced in working with children and during pregnancy/postpartum care.
All types of folks can work with herbal medicine; Megan is confidently trained in researching herbal and pharmaceutical drug interactions/contraindications, potential red flags that would require more advanced care and continually studies anatomy, physiology & pathophysiology to better understand the body.
Creating a partnership in accountability, trust and a love for plants is Megan’s mission in practice and she looks forward to working together!
Megan does not diagnose nor directly treat diseases, rather she can make assessments of imbalances based on patterns and physiologic presentation. She uses the plants and provides lifestyle suggestions to support healing and provide education.
Consultations
In an effort to make herbal support and education available to all, all consultations are sliding scale:
A full consultation (best suited for chronic and/or diagnosed conditions, long term health goals, etc.) is the initial intake. Our time together typically lasts 1.5-2 hours and consists of a thorough discussion of primary goals, health history, and other considerations.
Along with the initial consultation, Megan will take 2 hours to go over your case, putting together her thoughts, evaluations, checking herb-drug interactions and crafting formulas. This time is included in the cost of the initial consultation.
After the initial consultation, you are offered the oppertunity to have a out-take (7-10 days later, 15-20 minutes by phone or video & included in initial cost) in which Megan will summarize what she thinks is going on physiologically & energetically within your body, discuss lifestyle & dietary recommendations, answer any questions you may have and review herbal formulas. If you do not want to have an out-take, this information will be provided written, but often in not as much detail.
Clients are then asked to return for a follow-up session (typically 4-6 weeks after initial consultation) to discuss progress and make changes to formulas if needed. Follow-ups can last up to 1 hour for whatever you need to talk about! Follow-ups typically continue every month or two for 6 months, some choose to continue to see an herbalist multiple times a year for support, revised formulas, and general education for life’s ever-changing needs.
A short consultation lasts up to 30 minutes and will address an acute concern (cold, flu, infection short term conditions, general advice, walk-in, one time visit, etc.).
All consultations are currently virtual. Megan is focused on creating a safe, confidential, and empowering space to allow for healing no matter in person or online.
Cost
A full (first visit) consultation costs $100-180 sliding scale + cost of herbs
A follow-up session costs $50-90 sliding scale + cost of herbs
A short/acute consultation is $1/minute and lasts up to 30 minutes - please email to schedule.
No disclosure of finances is required, the client will decide which price is appropriate to pay based on their circumstances. Please understand that if you are able to pay more, you are balancing the scales to allow access to health care for lower-income folks.
Each month a full consultation is reserved at no cost for both consultation and formulas (follow-ups not included) for those who may not have the resources to pay to see an herbalist. Please email me directly to be added to the waiting list.
Herbs
Herbal formulas are offered in various forms, from food suggestions to tea, vinegar, and/or alcohol extract and beyond, emphasizing the client's valuable role in medicine making and taking. Assessing which form is most effective and convenient can make all the difference in the healing journey.
Clients are typically recommended 1-3 herbal formulas depending on their needs. On average a month’s supply of herbs (including a daily tea & tincture) comes out to around $100-130 (sliding scale) - around $3.50 - $5 a day. Formulas are made and mixed in house. For more information visit the apothecary page.
Formulas will be available to pay for and picked up/shipped the week following our appointment. Shipping costs $10 flat rate.
